Kaplan and Sadock's Concise Textbook of Clinical Psychiatry

Kaplan and Sadock's Concise Textbook of Clinical Psychiatry

Indispensable for Students and Mental Health Professionals

This is among the two or three most definitive works available in this field. It is organized in a reader/researcher-friendly format that enables mental health professionals to quickly access all the relevant information relating to a specific diagnostic category, and its simple and direct format is especially helpful to students. The authors enjoy a reputation deservedly second to none. After computers, I would say this is the next most indispensable item for practitioners and teachers and students in the field of mental health.

Jam Packed with Information

This is an incrediably comprehensive text on psychiatry. Each paragraph introduces new material in understandable terminology. I am using it for a graduate nursing class and find it to be heavy going. I recommend reading it with the companion study guide to help distill the most important information from all the material presented.

On Cooking: A Textbook of Culinary Fundamentals (4th Edition) Textbook only

On Cooking: A Textbook of Culinary Fundamentals (4th Edition) Textbook only

Chock full of errors and mistakes...do not trust!

This book along with the companion workbook is full of errors. Particularly erros in math formulas and calculations. Do not trust! This book is being used for the first time by my school in a culinary arts program and we have wasted a lot of time identifying errors in formulas and calculations. The editor/proofer of this text should be fired!

Required for school

This text is a requirement of my culinary arts program. It was about $10 cheaper on Amazon than at the school's bookstore. It is an all-inclusive and helpful reference for any culinary topic. I would recommend this for pros and home-chefs alike.

If I could only carry only one "cook book" this would be it.

I originally discovered this textbook on a culinary school syllabus. I worked through it on my own and put its principles into action learning more from it than any other single book. The recipes are easy to scale, and the nutritional breakdown is excellent. The recipes are practical, from the basics like mother sauces; to actual hotel and restaurant recipes from some of the finest chefs across the country. It covers: the history of the culinary arts, tools and equipment, and breaks down fundamental concepts on cooking from vegetables to pastry with easy to follow instructions and photos. If I could only carry one "cook book" this would be it.

Very Good

I am very pleased with this book and I recieved it very quickly and was in very good condition.

This Has Everything

If you are interested in cooking you will love this book. Anything and everything that has to do with it is in it. I own and use numerous cookbooks, but none of them compare. This book explains the "why" of technics. It goes from the basics to the complicated, from history to todays modern kitchens. From now on this will be the first cookbook I turn to. Love it!

Textbook of Veterinary Diagnostic Radiology

Textbook of Veterinary Diagnostic Radiology

excellent resource for students

I have found Thrall to be an excellent resource text to get a good grounding in radiography and radiology. The text is written in a very reader-friendly style, covering the main points without being verbose. The many radiographic examples often cover more than one instance of a particular condition, giving the reader different perspectives on conditions. My only desire would be to have more of the radiographs labeled with the radiological points referred to in the text. The updated sections on Ultrasonography and MRI give a student (and current practitioner new to these technologies) a good understanding of them.

excellent

This book is major in understanding and logically approaching X-rays.Of course it must be combined with other sources- no book can be taken by itself only. very good indeed!

Diagnostic Radiology

The online quiz component is useful, however it could be more user friendly in terms of access

Latest Edition Even Better

This latest edition of Textbook of Veterinary Diagnostic Radiology by Donald Thrall is a great improvement on the earlier edition (edition 2) that I had going through Uni. The basic physics is much more detailed, and the diagrams are great. Still the best in its field!

Excellent Resource

This text should be part of any veterinarian's library. The images are clearly labeled and descriptions are very helpful. I refer to it often and almost always find the help I need.

Handbook to Accompany Brunner and Suddarth's Textbook of Medical-Surgical Nursing

Handbook to Accompany Brunner and Suddarth's Textbook of Medical-Surgical Nursing

Great Take Along during Clinicals

I love this book because when you are doing your clinicals, you do not have lug around the heavy textbook. I kept this book with me and soon found all of my peers asking to use it to look up disease processes. It even breaks down the type of care you need to give your patient so you can plan your day wisely. I would hold on to this book tightly because it is a jewel on the floor.

Easy To Carry

I am using this in my nursing program, it's a very condensed version of the garganuta Med/Surg book, great on the floor for quick reference.

Med- Surg handbook

If you are using this textbook, then it is a must for clinicals.

Great Resource

I carry this with me to clinical rotations and have used it for case studies. One of the downfalls is that not each disease is covered as it claims, and had to seek elsewhere for pertinent information. Other than that, it is great to have, and better than the text, which has more information than what is really necessary.

An invaluable tool

This little powerhouse helped me make it through nursing school! It's a GREAT resource! Its 673 pages are packed with every conceivable disorder and/or disease with methods of diagnosis, diagnostic tests, medications for treatment followed with a full nursing process from assessment through management and outcomes. I used this book to write many, many care plans & carried it back and forth from classes to clinical to home -- it's a very portable, invaluable tool -- I wouldn't have survived nursing school without it.

Textbook of Diagnostic Microbiology

Textbook of Diagnostic Microbiology

Practical text book for diagnostic microbiology

I really think this is a great book. I am a medical doctor who wants to finish her specialisation in virology, microbiology and environmental hygiene. This book really covers the practical techniques to identify different microorganisms. You finally understand which steps are taken, the flow-charts are excellent. I have not found a similar book in the German literature.

Up-to-date micro for the MLT student

The hospital where my wife is doing MLT clinicals had this book. She was so impressed with it, she wanted one of her own. It is up-to-date with many color and B/W pictures of the most recent micro technologies and procedures. East to read and understand.

What?

This book is very hard to understand. It is not written for the average student.

The book that you want

Although this book is not as comprehensive as Manual of clinical microbiology edited by Murray, it is an excellent textbook for the beginner in the field of microbiology. The color photographies are in good quality and numerous, which are wonderful tools for the readers. In general, I recommand this book should be buy by any one who has interest in the microbiology.

Mahon and Manuselis - the best of both worlds

I was so pleased to find the second edition of Mahon and Manuselis because it addresses weaknesses of other texts we have used recently with senior level clinical laboratory science students. M & M find a good balance between an organism oriented approach and a body site/culture type orientation. We found the 10th ed of Bailey and Scott's text to be strong in the latter but not the former while Koneman is the reverse, and far too research oriented for this level of student. The book reads well; illustrations and photos are terrific. I'm a stickler for a good index and this one is great! From an educator's perspective it has all the essentials: objectives, practice questions with answers, chapter outlines, and case studies that add a nice clinical touch. It is inviting to read by use of color and organization. I have adopted it for next year and can't wait for our students' reactions.

Style: An Anti-Textbook

Style: An Anti-Textbook

"Pleasure flows from concepts" (52).

Lanham, the true hedonist, even epicure, when it comes to prose (and probably other things), understands that the root of all art, all human expression, is based on pleasure, and he knows how pleasure is made through sequences of words. I love him for this. In writing--as in all art--we have to play with our raw materials, and, as Aristotle says, we play when we imitate, and then we learn things. Invoke the Sanskrit goddess of divine play, "Lila." Galumph, Galumph, Galumph! Lanham's got the groove, what else can be said?

Return to Rhetoric!

This book is brilliant. It's also quite funny. It's an argument for bringing back rhetoric, particularly the study of literary ornamentation, to transmute the leaden prose and confused thinking all around us nowadays. According to Lanham, preaching "scientific" notions of clarity won't cause students to write more clearly: it will only make matters worse. (Are you listening, Strunk & White?) We must turn the act of writing into an aesthetic game. Once we recover our sense of literary play, and not before then, our prose will improve. Some of the examples that Lanham uses are rather dated now--my goodness, how stale and silly all that hippie lingo sounds today!--but his advice is timeless. Lanham occasionally overstates his case. This is often an effective pedagogical tactic. Although I think Lanham is mostly right about how to improve our prose, it's certainly possible to produce a gorgeous flow of words and still be a stranger to reason. (A little logic now and then is relished by the best of men.) I suppose there is a danger that some recalcitrant students will use Lanham's book as an excuse to avoid the hard work of thinking and writing clearly, just as some unimaginative grinds use Strunk & White's book to justify writing only the most ploddingly blunt and dessicated prose. Such are the hazards of pedagogy.

Counter-intuitive Masterpiece

Lanham, an expert on classical rhetoric, has written a witty, counter-intuitive work that argues, plausibly, that English teachers have erred in trying to instill clarity in their students' writings. What is needed, says Lanham, is to teach, not clarity, but delight--i.e., rhythm, euphony, word play, all the belletristic devices of classical rhetoric--before we can hope to see good writing in student compositions. Once students (and journalists and bureaucrats and everyone else) learn to enjoy writing as an aesthetic game, clarity will follow automatically. Teaching clarity divorced from delight is doomed to failure. Even if you don't agree with Lanham's argument, you will be thoroughly entertained and even usefully informed by his little essay.

Brilliant

Anyone interested in the teaching of prose must hunt down a copy. This is Lanham's most eloquent and persuasive work.

Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation (Neonatal Resuscitation: Textbook)

Good study tool

I used this book to study for NRP, and reading through it and doing the tests definitely prepared me for the class. Others I know used the disc to study and liked it as well. It's nice that there are 2 different types of study tools for people since not everyone learns the same way.

Easy to READ, easy to understand!

Make sure you get this book, its the most updated and is very user friendly!

Excellent Material...a must have

Helped me a lot in my neonatal resuscitation licensure. The CD was a good source by itself.

bought it used

even though i bought it used, the condition of the book is wonderfully new. i was also glad to have received the book on time( indicated during purchase). i would gladly deal with the seller again. faru, chicago

Passed NRP with flying colors!

I'm a computer person moreso than a booky....... So using the DVD that comes with the book was VERY helpful.. It has the exact information the book offers and MORE!

Textbook of Veterinary Anatomy 3rd edition

Textbook of Veterinary Anatomy 3rd edition

Great Service, Fast Shipping, As described

The book came as described, which was new! and in a timely fashion. Service was great, I plan on buying more books through Amazon.

Anatomy book for veterinary school

Interesting book. Some of the reading is kind of long and tedious but it does teach you a lot about almost every type of animal. This was a required textbook for my gross anatomy class.

A necessity for veterinary students

This book really helped me get through comparative and large animal anatomy. It gives you a good overview of functional and comparative anatomy between major species. I would recommend this book to anyone in vet school.

Very detailed, covers everything

This book is great if you have time to sit down and have a good read of it. It is not useful for quick checking of anatomy, yet this is what an atlas is for. If you take the time to read sections entirely it gives you a great understanding of the "big picture" and explains functional anatomy well.

To be used with other vet anatomy books

At first I found this book difficult to appreciate and get into - but once I did I found that it was extremely useful. There aren't too many other vet anatomy textbooks with as much detail. However, the text can be dull and there are only a limited number of color photos. So I would recommend using this book along with other vet anatomy textbooks which provide better pictures.

Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong, Revised and Updated Edition

Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong, Revised and Updated Edition

More boring than history

The author states that history is taught in a boring way. This book is worse than a boring history book. I like the idea of finding out the complete truth of undisclosed facts, like Helen Keller was a communist, but his constant harrang of school book writers gets old faster than the crusades. Telling obscured history, like the vikings may have lived in the New England area long before columbus, is fine and interesting. But then, page after page of criticism of the "subversive" text book industry makes this book unbearable. 10% of the book is interesting, 90% is whinning.

Simple Facts and Evidence Shows Our Textbooks Need An Overhaul

This book is filled with concrete examples of important details that are left out of history books because they will create controversy and might make students ask questions. Instead the goal of history has become to bore a student with unrelated and mostly useless facts - that any bored person will do his/her best to avoid. The human brain learns and remembers what is emotionally stimulating. If you tell history as a story with drama then it will tend to stick, "Emotion is the glue that causes history to stick". James W. Loewen "Study after study shows that students successfully resist learning "facts" like these. Indeed they resist all too well. When two thirds of American seventeen year olds cannot place the Civil War in the right half-century or 22 percent of my students reply that the `Vietnam War was fought between North and South Korea', we must salute young people for more than mere ignorance. This is resistance raised to a high level. Students are simply not learning even those details of American history that educated citizens should know about. Still less do they learn what caused the major development in our past. Therefore, they cannot apply lessons from the past to current issues. Unfortunately, students are left with no resources to understand, accept, or reject historical referents used in arguments by candidates for offices, sociology professors, or newspaper journalists. If knowledge is power, ignorance cannot be bliss." IN textbooks the goal seems to be to present history NOT as a human drama of evolving understanding with progress and reversals (one step forward, 2 steps back) - but instead as an ever improving evolution to a better way of life. Page 172 "Perhaps the most letting critic Frances Fitz Gerald made in her 1979 survery of American history textbooks, America Revised, was that they leave out ideas." The problems with ideas is that sometimes it can be obvious which ideas are better yet the ones with the right ideas don't always win. It is easier to force memorization of useless facts than the show the students that the world doesn't work as continuous evolving society. The students would ask why. We all know how irritated some adults get when children keep asking why. Especially when they don't know the answer and it is below them to accept that. His basic message is that our history books are dooming us to repeat our mistakes of the past by forcing us (as a country) to make decisions based on infomercial, or angry racist talk show hosts as we have no background knowledge to make informed decisions. Lack of knowledge means a person can be controlled by using fear of the unknown.

Any kid over the age of 12 will love it

This eye-opening book puts multicultural historical interpretation into language that young kids will absolutely love. Although its themes and topics initially seem removed from the curriculum of junior high, Loewen's iconoclastic, glass-smashing approach to history will rivet young readers, most of whom have learned buckets of skepticism by the time they reach middle school. The book strikes a nerve with younger readers precisely because it's one of the first ones they'll pick up that confesses what they've long suspected: adults know that lots of what teachers are teaching is hokum. If this book title appeals to you, regardless of whether you agree with Loewen, chances are good that you were one of those kids and that even now you receive the official company line with great skepticism. You knew that your textbooks and your teachers were often chock full of horse hockey, but didn't have the ammunition to prove it. Rather than tearing down the accepted canons of U.S. history, however, this book does something that's much more destructive to approved history textbooks and ultimately much more illuminating. It makes an irrefutable case that what's presented as historical fact is often historical interpretation, that the interpretation depends on who's doing the telling, and that the lessons to be learned from the telling almost always depend on whether the teller ended up atop the winner's heap or under the winner's boot. The Germans like to say that the victor writes the history, but Loewen puts the lie to such apologists by proving that losers write history, too, they just have a lot harder time getting it printed in a school textbook. No question this is a great read, informative, and filled with the kind of attitude that made "A Series of Unfortunate Events" and "Captain Underpants" runaway winners for rebels of all ages.

Just Say Know

Our education system continues to Dumb Down. Knowing the past is key to not repeating mistakes and growing as a society. Someone should have sent this book to Bush/Cheney. It may not have helped but could not have hurt.

Read it!!!!!!

This book is so amazing and I recommend it for any person wanting to know some truths about our history. I am a Native American and to read some of Christopher Columbus' journals is appalling. There is an enormous amount of information in this book and as a teacher I think that it's an injustice to keep this to myself.

Study Guide to Accompany Smeltzer and Bare, Brunner and Suddarth's Textbook of Medical Surgical Nursing (Point (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins))

THIS BOOK IS FANTASTIC

I LOVE THIS BOOK. I HAVE USED IT ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS to look information up. It has great pictures and detail information on nursing interventions.

Answers in back of book do not match up with correct answers!

Not terrible, but there is one MAJOR problem: very sloppy editing. The answers in the back of the book do not match up with the real, correct answer. This is true for at least 5-10% of the questions. That is a good percentage, especially considering you do not want your test results to drop from 75 to 70 because of these slobs. Also, since the answers in the back do not include any rationale, you literally have to double-check each and every answer in your book, lest you be misled by the constant editing mistakes. Since Lippincott has a virtual monopoly on nursing textbooks, and must make millions off of us, the least they can do is NOT to employ a drunken copy editor. Shame on you Mary Jo Boyer!!! Shame on you Lippincott!

skip this one

I did not find this to be of any assistance in learning the contents of its parent book. There are no NCLEX questions. It was more like a book the instructor might use to see if you read the chapters, which is an exercise for a high school class, not a college lecture class.

Exactly as stated

It's perfect. It helps quite a bit to summarize the info in the chapters.

To all Nursing Students

If you have the hard back copy of this book, then this will be a good source. It doesn't have NCLEX style questions in it. It only have regualr questions. This book has good info. But it is not helping me on my test.

Introduction to Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics (The Mcgraw-Hill Chemical Engineering Series)

Introduction to Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics (The Mcgraw-Hill Chemical Engineering Series)

Introduction to Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics (The Mcgraw-Hill Chemical Engineering Series)

It is a great condition book, however, it was shipped very slowly, and I didn't receive it until 2 weeks after the purchase.

Carlos's Review

This edition of the Introduction to Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics is much more friendly version to the reader than former ones. It also has more industry related problems. Another change with respect to the former ones is that The example problems are exposed and solved in the SI system of units, which is a more globally used system than the English one. It is a classic book for chemical engineers and a must read book either as a main textbook or as an alternate textbook, for anyone planning to do undergraduate or graduate thermodynamic courses in that discipline.

Pretty good for a book you grow to hate

As far as text books go, this one is not bad. It's decently well written and put together. There are a lot of graphs and diagrams to explain the material. There are not as many example problems as there need to be, but the questions at the end of the chapter are very straightforward. Not a very extensive reference section either.

Wonderful book, fast shipping from amazon

No one can even think about any flaw for that book. Wonderful book. Amazon's service is the best too

Solid textbook

This is a solid thermo textbook. Goes over concepts and theories fairly well. There are plenty of worked out examples throughout the chapters and appendixes so you know what you're doing. The authors explain everything in a clear and cohesive manner. Somethings are overwhelming, but it is thermodynamics. Plenty of appendixes for steam tables, interroplation, unit conversions, and virial equation constants, etc. I suggest you get the Schaum's outline as a good reference too.

Introduction to Chemical Principles (9th Edition)

Introduction to Chemical Principles (9th Edition)

A students point of view

I am a chem major and had the worst luck of having a terrible instructor and book for my introductory classes. After a few horrible attempts at teaching I asked a different professor if they had a book they recommended. I ttold them that I would be trying to do this independently from class and that as a chem major I would need get a good solid grounding in chem. The professor gave me this book saying that it had been rejected by the committee that selects the books for the intro chem classes. Cons: there are a few mistakes in this book and when I asked the professor why it was rejected she stated it was because there were some chemistry in the book that was wrong. Pros: I loved the book. It was very easy to read and to follow especially if going on it independently ( of course when I had questions I asked my graduate level friends and they cleared this up). Overall it was a great book it really explained it on easy terms at least well enough that when other future professors went over a topic I found I could either grasp what they were talking about much quicker than the other students around me or I had gone a little more in depth than the professor wanted to go but because I did I was able to understand it better and quicker. The book is not perfect but it is a great basic chem book. Even now 2 semesters later I got unlucky to get stuck with a really dry hard to understand professor and I am using this book to reference as I once again continue to do independent learning. One more note: I use this book as reference book so I have never read it back to back..I have always followed the syllabus in my classes and just looked up what I needed to know, worked out the example problems, and the cumulative problems. When my answered differed from the text that was when I asked my TA to help me solve. This has worked fabulously for me. I hope that this review helped. Heck for the price it can't hurt to try it. You probably won't regret it.

Sorry, but I am finding incredibly bad mistakes in this...

It's too bad that this book isn't that badly written, though I disagree with the way the book is organized. I got asked to teach chemistry at our local community college for mainly nursing and respiratory therapists. It's their only chemistry course, and we didn't make it through two weeks of this book without finding so many errors in the questions in the back of the chapters, the quizzes, and I am finding more and more on the CD-ROM provided with this. I did not pick this book, and the department has gotten me another recommended chemistry book to replace this one, coming in next week. In the meantime, I have to double-check all the answers and do a lot of the tests and quizzes on my own with material from other sources, because the stuff for this book is so bad. This is not the fault totally of the writers, but of the publisher too, who needs to have someone capable of checking and proofreading who knows chemistry, and can sit there with a calculator and check all the answers. I cannot expose a group of students going into medical professions, who need to have a good basic grounding in chemistry, to such a badly proofed text! Unit Operations of Chemical Engineering

Unit Operations of Chemical Engineering

The ChE book to keep

If you only keep one ChE book from school this should be it. Along with Perry's, this is a must have for any ChE in downstream or chemical operations.

HSLOE

Best book I know about Chemical Engineering. It provided me with the theoretical understanding of most of the technological problems through out my life as a responsible engineer working 25 years for an international food company.

A Chemical Engineering Classic

Some prior reviewers are mistaken about this book being an annotation of Perry or of little value. The "unit operations" are the framework of chemical engineering. McCabe and Smith was the definitive work on unit operations when I was a student in the 1960's. Updated and with additional authors, it still is.

Excellent book

Warren McCabe has written a unit operations book that is most adequately utilized for fluid mechanics. The separations sections are slightly abbreviated, and lack more refined details that might be found in a more specialized work. However, as a student in a separations course, I found myself referencing this book several times. The examples in the chapters were 'open-ended' enough to require real engineering problem-solving skills. Overall, an extremely well put-together text.

fluid mechanics ,transprtation of fluids

it is the best books i have ever read in my semester ofchemical engineering. the topic i like the most, is transportation offluids .this book is recommended by my professor. the matter of turbulent flow and laminar flow is just fantastic. <p>thank you!

Chemical Magic

Chemical Magic

chemical magic

I am a professional magician working on an elementary school assembly program. I needed a way to have liquids change colors. This book had exactly what I needed. It also had a lot of other chemical effects that could certainly be used by science teachers covering a wide range of chemical topics. It is easily understood, and even gives ideas for the presentation. good book

Excellent ! The first one for many chemists.

Excellent book !. For many chemistry students it has been the first book in order to see chemistry as a beautiful and funny science. Dr. L. A. Ford is no longer living but this masterpiece will remain for many years as an element for motivation in teaching and learning chemistry.

Amazing Experiments ...that you can't do.

This book reminds me of how we've gone a society of educational discovers to one that irrationally sees harm in a simple chemistry set. There are experiments that I've heard told and retold, some of which I seriously attributed to exaggeration. For instance, a glass beaker submerged in a liquid that has the same refractive index as glass, rendering the beaker completely invisible. Or, another, volumes of smoke made as if by magic. It turns out they're all in here! Don't let the physical size fool you, because this book is chalked full of some of the most amazing and impressive chemistry experiments you've ever seen. The problem, however, is that the typical home reader won't be able to get their hands on these chemicals anymore. So while you can read about them, you can't conduct the experiments yourself. About the only people who'd get practical benefit out of this book would be college chemistry professors who want to lure students into the profession. This would be an impressive way to do it.

Proceed with Caution

This book gives lots of chemical demonstration ideas. However, some are entirely too dangerous to do. You must use a lot of common sense when considering doing any of these demonstrations. Some are not safe at all. Mercury and CCl4 are EPA regulated. It's not advisable to put ethanol in your mouth to spit out in front of students... This only demonstrates bad lab techniques. Make sure you do the first experiment in the book outside or in a fume hood. It releases a strong odor and an acid vapor. Definitely not something you want your students breathing!

Not organic but entertaining!

Each experiment first explains the "action" or the effect intended to produce. Secondly, necessary elements are listed along with their appropriate quantities. Thirdly, a very fortunate addendum to each experiment explains why the reaction occurred and how it did. Finally, most experiements are augmented by a primitive diagram, whose descriptive efforts vary according the action(s) of the chemist, but nevertheless aid the reader with some significance to visualize where certain items should be oriented. Anyone interested in this book will understand it is not for anarchy or extremely plexiform experiments to uncover the human genome. Mad scientists, this book is unfortunately not for you, but anyone intrigued by paradoxical chemical experiments, such as fire submerged in water, a burning bush that is not consumed by its flames, and other such fascinating elements, will be pleased with its contents. These experiments usually do not require manifold ingredients so they are ideal for high-school chemistry classes, introductory college chemistry, or entertainment during a meal. A waiter who can perform such legerdemain at events will not remain a waiter long, and those of you who are addicted to gambling and teasing friends certain things are impossible will immediately recognize the value of this book. I have rated this book 4-star primarily because the majority of the experiments are prosaic or have no genuine purpose to belong the the publishment. However, those experiments that really are "chemical magic" scintillate like stars amid the black heavens, illuminating their observers and imparting them joy at a further comprehension of experimental chemistry.

Inside Story Of My Chemical Romance

Inside Story Of My Chemical Romance

i got this from hottopic

i thought this book was OK , nothing amazing , no real inside story but its a fun/quick read for fans.

rip off

There's no inside story, they even put incorrect names with band members. Poor excuse to make money on a great band.

Inside Story Of My Chemical Romance

This book, in my opinion, was undeniably horrible. I bought it because I'm guilty of being an obsessive My Chemical Romance fan and gee, did that come back to bite me. The pictures are all taken from magazines and/or online sources and the written content in the book was nothing new (quotes from the band were also taken from magazines and online interviews). If you never heard of the band or do not have internet, then this book could possibly mean something to you. If not, on the other hand, this black-and-white paged book (accompanied with a couple of colored pages in the middle which, unfortunately, are some of the worst pictures of the band) would just give you a feeling of emptiness in your pockets. Spare the time from having to drive back to the mall to return the book. Oh yes, one more thing, remember that the book is unofficial (something that I forgot to notice when buying).

it was okay

This book was okay but they got names wrong, like they called Bob "Brian" once and Gerard "Gerald" a few times, after they had called them Bob and Gerard already. Other than typos it was an okay book but there wasn't anything you couldn't read on the internet.

my chemical romance

It was a gift for my daughter and she loved it and has already re-read a second time.

Concepts of Chemical Dependency

Concepts of Chemical Dependency

Book is in very good shape, brand new

The book came in the time it was supposed to, and at was in perfect condition.

great transaction

The book came promptly and in excellent condition, it was easy ordering it and receiving it

Concepts of chemical dependency

Good information, especially for someone who has limited knowledge regarding chemical dependency. However, considering it is a textbook, it too opinionated for my taste. I perfer textbooks that are neutral and stick e ntirely to the facts.

Critique of Concepts of Chemical Dependency by Doweiko

This book gives a solid overview of chemicals of use/abuse, focusing particularly upon alcohol. The one caveat I have about recommending it unconditionally is that the author seems to interweave his bias along with the factual material, such that it is sometimes hard to tease out the actual facts from the propaganda. But the book is user-friendly and, if someone is wanting to get an overall sense of various substances of use/abuse and their effects, this book certainly has much to offer.

Dr. Perkinson works with a number of people I know in the Christian treatment arena. And his book lays out some fundamental senses-knowledge rules of the road for counselors of all beliefs. But I yearn for much more willingness to avoid misleading talk about a "higher power," "God as you understand Him," and similar compromise language.God and Alcoholism: Our Growing Opportunity in the 21st Century. The "higher power" approach has led to the downward plunge to the thought that you can make the AA group your higher power. But what is a higher power? It's not the Creator. It's not the Highest Power--Almighty God.Turning Point: A History of Early A.A.'s Spiritual Roots and Successes. So too the approach has encouraged sick people, new to recovery, to "create a god" of their own understanding. A New Way In: Reaching the Heart of a Child of God in Recovery with His Own, Powerful, Historical Roots. What is such a fabricated deity? It's not the God of our fathers of whom Bill Wilson spoke. The Conversion of Bill W.: More on the Creator's Role in Early A.A.. Straight shooting even by counselors with diverse client populations is important. If they are talking to Christians, they need to have the Ten Commandments in mind--no other Gods before me. They need to have Jesus' teaching that no one comes to the Father but by him. They need to desist from trying to pacify people of all faiths by suggesting surrender to the no faith approach of today--your higher power can be a light bulb, a radiator, Something, Somebody, Santa Clause, or nothing at all. When Early AAs Were Cured and Why, Third Edition. I am as supportive of trained and training counselors as the next person concerned about alcoholism, addiction, and substance abuse. But counselors need to know A.A. history. They need to know that early A.A. was a Christian Fellowship. The need to know that belief in the Creator was required. And they need to know the success rate of the pioneers was 75% and later 93% in Cleveland. They should not salt the source with substitute seasonings just to appeal to people of other persuasions. Congratulations to the author for his research and experience. Let's demand, as well, that accurate history be made a part of any such guide and any such approach.Introduction to the Sources and Founding of Alcoholics Anonymous There's nothing to fear from facts. The truth can "make" you free. Very possibly author-practitioners should identify themselves as believers or secular protagonists. If they are believers, they should have no problem pointing out that belief in the power of God has been a time-honored approach to cure for centuries and centuries. God Bless, Dick B.

Great textbook!

I bought this for an addictions class I took as part of my masters, and found it to be very helpful. I strongly recommend it.

The Best I Have Ever Read!

This book is a must for every clinician working in the field. I use the material working with both adult and adolescent clients. The concepts are written in a manner which make it appropriate for any group/individual regardless of age, sex, education level, or ethnic background. The Spirituality exercises are the best I have ever seen.

The Best in the Business

I teach this college course to new counselors. By the time they are through with this treatment manual they really know what they are doing. Everything a counselor needs to know is covered. The book is informative, meticulously researched and fun. It makes students feel good about themselves. It is the simply best text in the business. I highly recommend this book.

The Nuts and Bolts of Mainline Treatment

This book teaches addiction counselors exactly what to do in treatment. It leaves no stone unturned and covers everything a counselor needs to know to offer the best treatment in the world. Besides the book makes you feel good about yourself. All of the major treatment centers in the US had a part in making this book great. At every center this book is within arms reach of every good counselor in the building. All counselors should have this book and use it often. I am a clinical director and I give it to all of my new counselors--they love it.

Chemical Principles: The Quest for Insight

Chemical Principles: The Quest for Insight

more in depth chemistry text book

I bought this book for my son because his college used it as Freshman chemistry text book. We already have two text books. On is General Chemistry by James Brady. It is a very nice book. We bought it in the library used book sell. It is clear and simple. It is enough for high school chemistry class and AP chemistry test. I looked at the problem sets in the MIT chemistry class. I know it is more difficult than my son's high school chemistry class especially in atomic structure. So I brought the book for him to take a look. I read the book and saw that the book is much more comprehensive. But the explaination is clear and a lot of insight. This is a wonderful college book for people who has good background in high school chemistry and want to persuade a career in Science and engineering in college. But is not a good choice for high school students or the first chemistry book.

fantastic.

Admittedly an intro book, but it still does a nearly consistent job of proving the things it says. That said, if you just want to say get a 5 on AP Chem, this book will be frustratingly thorough and in depth. I loved it. Clear and detailed, highly recommend.

Mediocre, at best

So what if UCLA uses this as their primary freshman text? UCSD (where I go), MIT, and other schools use it too, and every student I've met agrees that this book is sub-par. It isn't as clear as it can be, is bereft of example problems that apply to the homework, has at least a few mistakes per chapter in the solutions manual, spends way too much time deriving some (useless) things more applicable to physical chemisty, etc.

Great!

I got the order sooner than i expected and it was in exactly the condition they said it was in. I am very pleased with my order.

Confusion

Book layout is overly confusing. Text is sometimes not as clear as can be and needs more practice examples (most apparent in sections like isomers and titrations). Yes like one person said before, UCLA does use this text to teach Life science majors, but there are better choices. There are numerous mistakes in the solution guides still, and Zumdahl's "Chemical Principles" is a much better read in my opinion. I actually used it to clear up points this text was muddy on. Your mileage may vary.

Pihkal: A Chemical Love Story

Pihkal: A Chemical Love Story

This is one of the best books written.

This book has the story and the science, the fantasy and the dry reality. I love there is a love story here as well. This is inspiration for couples to dive deeper into each other.

Pihkal, truely a love story with one's work.

I thought this book very infomative and educational. It gives great insight to DR.Shulgin & his wifes life work. A must read for any aspiring chemist. This book cuts away all the propaganda surrounding many of these recreational compounds and chemicals. The facts and nothing else. Educate yourself, knowledge is always your friend.

Highly analytical, relevant and a record of reality......

I purchased PIHKAL from Amazon and read it in it's entirety. The most poignant aspect of this book reveals that as we are organic machines, our consciousness is just another chemically induced perception and therefore only one valid reality predisposed by evolution for survival. Shulgin's Genius is honed with such objectivity, innocence, dedication and clarity that he is able to both successfuly and interestingly document the human-mind altering effects produced by the synthesised compounds entirely dedicated to the second-half of this book. Furthermore, I have read all of the Amazon reviews regarding PIHKAL and feel that some just do not get the extreme depth of this work. Reading this incredibly open account of Human reality means that there will always be dull bits and parts that make one cringe because that's how real life is for one and all. The potential reader needs to approach this work with an open mindset and absorb the content without pretence, preconception or professional envy affecting clarity because this book is about the other side of the coin. Finally, to dedicate ones life to recording Human perception so openly in hardcopy is a tremendous quantum leap ahead of the absurd revisionist realities that people in our "Soap World" prefer to pretend that they live via TV and use to deal with personal issues through the application of anger, violence and greed which are wrongly accepted as legitimate relief mechanisms. In summary, PIHKAL is an extremely important piece in the Jigsaw of the "age of reason" and awareness. Don't be threatened, it definitely deserves at least "5 Stars". Read it, do it and get to the next level...... the evolution of mind.

Invaluable Resource

For the person looking for both hard information regarding the world of psychoactive substances (and The Drug War), and an enjoyable honest and heartfelt love story, this is for you. A real masterpiece!

Very good book

Very interesting. Very well explained, and the chemistry is flawless. 6 Stars to be truthful.. A must have for any chemist.

Quantitative Chemical Analysis

Quantitative Chemical Analysis

Quant text review

The text is an easy read, with a lot of statistical tables to reference for lab write ups. One of the better chemistry books I have ever had to use.

excellent text, FAST delivery

The text I received was exactly what I ordered and in better condition than I expected... it was in perfect condition. This textbook saved me about 30% than if I had purchased it from my college bookstore USED and about 50% than if I had purchased it there NEW!!! Also, I received the book VERY FAST, within 3 or 4 days, and the shipping was free!

Quantitative Chemical Analysis

It never came in the mail. If it were more than $5.00 I wouldve complained but I just bought it from the bookstore for $80 instead.

Fast Shipping

Received the book quickly and the condition of the book was what it was described to be.

Excellent Text on Analytical Chemistry

This review refers to the fourth edition of this book. I bought this book at the Stanford University Bookstore as a reference text for quantitative analytical chemistry. Overall, I'd say it's an excellent book which covers all the fundamentals of the subject. It also contains a great deal of useful data. The editing is excellent (I didn't notice any typos) and so are the graphics (tables, charts, pictures). Mind you, this subject is so big that only a small fraction can be covered even in a large tome like this. But the author has used the space available to him well. I note that the reviewers who do not like this book seem to be students while those who love it are teachers or experienced engineers (like myself). I suppose that means that the author is assuming a certian level of knowledge on the part of his readers and is not spending a large amount of time explaining basic concepts.

Chemical Sensitivity

Chemical Sensitivity

superior book

I am a breast cancer survivor and find myself extremely sensitive to fragrances, laundry products, cleaning products, etc. I have ready many things trying to figure out WHY this happens to me, and what to do. This book explains both. This MD had it herself and treats it. In addition, it gets down to a cellular analysis on why it takes place and what you can do about it. Lots of references. Superior book...a MUST HAVE !

Review of Chemical Sensitivity

I think the few pages that this pamphlet contain are grossly over priced. Tbe merchandise was delivered in a timely manner, but I was disappointed in regard to the merchandise.

Chemical Sensitivity

I have read several of Sherry Roger's books and find them all very informative. We need to take a look at why we are sick and the possible culprits. Alternative health care. This booklet was about the toxic things we live with everyday.

GOOD REFERENCE AND A QUICK READ!!!

I was diagnosed with Chemical Injury almost 2 years ago, and this book provides a good overview of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. I've given copies to most of my friends and health care providers to educate them. Thanks for writing it Sherry! For a longer and more in depth look at Chemical Injury, Lynn Lawson's books and Theron Randolph's books are also very informative. Also, one should review the Global Report MCS website for more brochures, books and resources. Best of luck.

A must read if you know someone with chemical or fragrance sensitivity.

A must read for anyone who has a family member or friend with chemical sensitivity. This book will help you understand the illness.

Chemical Principles

Chemical Principles

timely, great purchase

THe book was in great condition, like new and it arrived in a timely fashion. I had no problems what so ever. Great price!

Use 5th edition if you can...

There is very little difference between this edition and the previous one which is normally the case with college textbooks today. It's a mystery to me why colleges use any material by this author. Brooks and Cole should stop publishing him. The Zumdahl methods for teaching chemistry are truly awful. You can find various mistakes in this and previous editions of this text. His derivation regarding the ideal gas law is one example. Why even include it in the text if you can't do it correctly? He obviously does not understand basic Newtonian Physics.

Chemical Principles

Chemical Principles Chemical Principles is a fantastic book! I use it as a reference text with anything i dont understand being looked up straight away in this book. I am a high school student who has found this book to be very useful in my studies of chemistry! I recommend that you buy this book as i found it easy to understand and has many examples questions and activities for you to do.

Waste of Money

Not only did my chemistry class not use this book, but I cannot imagine how ANY class could use this. This book is so badly written, that it isn't even worth opening. It doesn't follow any particular order, and it frequently jumps back and forth between highly advanced topics and surprisingly dumb examples. Reading through even a single chapter of this book will lower the intelligence quotient of any sane individual. I suppose this book could serve a useful purpose, but only if that purpose was to teach the students to forget what they already knew about chemistry. I think I've made my point: do not buy this book under any circumstances.

Why does my university use this book?

Why does my university use this book? The University of Washington uses this book to weed out the pre med students. Why do they choose this book? Zumdahl purposely wrote this book to be confusing. Try reading pp. 668 through 670 in the fifth edition. He wrote this to be especially confusing by not being consistent with phase signs nor giving clear statements, such as "When the phase of the right orbital is reversed and combined with the left orbital." What orbitals is he talking about? The ones on a figure, that happen to be on a different page, which is not in view when reading this page? This book is horrible and is designed for the student to fail. Thank you Zumdahl and UW for trying to ruin chemistry for your students.

Perry's Chemical Engineers' Handbook, Eighth Edition (Chemical Engineers Handbook)

Perry's Chemical Engineers' Handbook, Eighth Edition (Chemical Engineers Handbook)

Caution! Not compatible with Windows Vista!

I just got a new computer with Windows Vista. When I tryed to run my Perry's Handbook Electronic Version, I got an error message: "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you're running. Check your computer's operating system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher." DO NOT buy this product if you have Windows Vista!

Great version of this classic handbook

As a Chemical Engineer, I reference Perry's Handbook weekly. The CD-ROM version is much more accessible to those of us in this new computer saavy generation. The searchability (index? what's that?) and interactivity make this a worth-while buy, especially if you don't already have a paper copy of Perry's. You can select data from a table and paste into other applications, instead of staring at the tiny print of a huge book and typing all the numbers by hand. You can also find topics quickly by the contents (which are linked to other parts of the book) and the search features. All in all, a good buy for me. WARNING! This is ONLY compatible with Windows machines. A Mac user will be able to see the information, but not use the search functions or the interactive data tables.

An unbeatable resource

Perry's Chemical Engineers' Handbook handbook is really a mixed bag, and how useful it turns out to be is really a matter of what kind of information you are looking for. I've always felt that this is the definitive book if you want raw facts and numbers. The entire volume is crammed with technical data that, for some, can't be found elsewhere. All the groundwork is covered; conversion factors, symbols, kinetics, interdisciplinary studies (several), thermodynamics, and just about anything else that coincides with the field of engineering. On a personal level, I've used it on several occasions when collecting field data, but its uses go well beyond that. For the sheer amount of information covered, the volume remains fairly well organized, and never veers too far from what you are researching. The downside is that it can often seem overwhelming to students or those with passing involvement or interest. Despite the dependable presentation, it can be difficult to understand for people who haven't been brought up to speed on the variation of the topic they wish to examine. Even though the all the data is present, understanding it won't be easy until you've familiarized yourself and comprehend the tables and usage. Some claim that the book was written primarily for academics, though I don't see that as true. Anyone can use the book effectively once they get the hang of it. Even though it might have some drawbacks, I truly can't see how anyone in the field of Chemical Engineering could not have this book on their shelf. It is the ultimate source of chemical data and interdisciplinary studies. If you don't yet own this one, I really can't see how you can go wrong in purchasing it.

This is so funny

Check out what that kid wrote on October 25, 1999. He gave the book one star. Someone find him and tell him how much of an idiot he is. He wrote the dumbest thing I have ever seen. Who the hell reads Perry's cover to cover. Is he really that dumb just go buy a book about making bombs if you want to "make bombs". Another thing any normal person would realize after the first million pages is that Chemical Engineers don't learn how to make bombs. what a retard. Oh yeah, good book

Good service

I got the book in a very short time and the process was also quick. 2 years ago, I had a problem with an Amazon affiliated store and took me such a long time to get my money refunded but this time, Amazon did a great job. Thank you for shipping in time!

Automobiles of the Chrome Age: 1946-1960

Automobiles of the Chrome Age: 1946-1960

Five star pictures in a three star frame

Have autos looked any better than Michael Furman's stunning photos, I doubt it. These vehicles look just perfect with liquid looking bodywork and perfect chrome, in fact they probably look better than ones just off the assembly line. This is fine art photography and if you wonder how the 'Furman look' is achieved there is a clue on his website. Click on BIO and you'll see a shot of his studio with an amazing looking light panel hovering over what looks like a very small car. It seems to me that his controlled lighting source is the key and when digital images are printed on quality paper with a 200dpi screen you'll see the perfect picture as on these pages. The choice of cars seems rather arbitrary, classics like the 56 Austin-Healy, the 58 Ferrari Testa Rosa or the 59 Cadillac Eldorado are a few page turns from possibly the ugliest chrome grill ever of the 51 Hudson Hornet or the bubblegum styling and color scheme of the 56 Ford Crown Skyliner. As well as whole cars there are plenty of lovely close-ups of logos and styling features, the fins of the 48 and 59 Cadillacs, a Buick 49 Dyna-Flow trunk handle or the hood ornament of a 57 Oldsmobile Super 88. Furman's photography can make any vehicle sparkle. Awe-inspiring as all these photos are I was very disappointed with the book because it is the wrong shape. There are seventy-one side shots of cars and they clearly don't fit an upright page. They rightly have generous margins left and right which means they are even smaller still on the page. If the book had been turned sideways into a landscape format it would perfectly complement these profile photos so instead of being small and surrounded by too much white space the existing ones would be three or four times larger. Another advantage would be to avoid the middle of the book splitting those shots that do extend over a spread. Also, for a lavish photobook it has the usual conceit of placing all the captions on back pages but because of the wrong shape there is plenty of white space on each page for the captions to be set in some elegant typography. Michael Furman takes beautiful auto photographs and it is unfortunate that this book does not give them the exposure they rightly deserve. ***FOR AN INSIDE LOOK click 'customer images' under the cover.

Mike Does It Again!!

This book is another loving tribute to those classic autos that can send shivers up your spine sometimes, they're so cool. I simply cannot see how Mike's photography can be improved upon in any way, shape or form. Buy this; you won't regreat it, promise.

beautiful!!!!

Micheal Furman created an amazing collection of car photography. You're taken by the beauty of the different design of the era. Excellent gift for any car enthusiast.

The Art of the Automobile: The 100 Greatest Cars

The Art of the Automobile: The 100 Greatest Cars

Just beautiful

Gorgeous! Photos, text and format. Gave it to my brother and it shut him up for several hours, while he pretended his truck outside was an Italian piece of automotive art.

The Art of the Automobile

Great information. There are models mentioned that I am seeing for the first time.

This is a truly beautiful book!

I purchased this book for our lobby at work and we gave it to a client who absolutely raved about it. I've replaced the copy and I keep hearing "ooh"'s and "ah"'s of appreciation from our clients as they pour over the picures. The photos are large and very clear. The cars are positioned in romantic gorgeous locations which fuels the imagination. I don't expect this copy to stay long either!

Very nice

The author's list of what constitutes the 100 greatest cars is pretty sound but there are many others that would equally deserve a place; however you can't put everything in and still have a book that will sell for an economic price. Most of the photos are superb but there are a few that are disappointing such as the Thunderbird pics or the VW Beetle at the end. The photo of the Cisitalia has the rear cropped off, ouch. <br>The portrait photos are mostly full page and fortunately the publisher has avoided the trap of spreading them across the gutter and eliminating details in the middle, with a few exceptions. Overall it's a lovely book and if you like classic cars you are certain to treasure it.

A Beautiful Book

Elegant, pretty, but not designed to give much in the way of details on the cars, or more than one or two pictures per car. But he gives you a top 10, and top 100, and a second 100 - but where are the Triumph roadsters?

Social Media Marketing: An Hour a Day

Social Media Marketing: An Hour a Day

A Good Book and Great Responsive Author - www.gjcae.org

I had been on the waiting list of Amazon.com for over 3 months waiting for this book to be released and it is exactly what I hoped for. I'm actually only 108 pages through it now as I "peeked" at all the self help guides that the author has in the appendix. I want to jump right in and get it going but Dave's advice to take your time and learn the hows and whys is so important. I was not looking for a social commentary on social media but wanted to know the ins and out, nuts and bolts, on how to implement a successful marketable strategy and this book does it. Only this morning I actually went to the blog and sent an email to the author, Dave, and was surprised that within a few minutes he had responded . Talk about getting more than a book!! What is so engaging is the author is energetic, evangelistic in his zeal to help others, and willing to share to make this journey easier for others to follow. It's a step by step guide for an emerging dynamic field which is affecting us now and will do so far into the future. I'm glad this book exists and is so affordable and even happier the author is willing and able to help us along. Bob Johnson

A practical guidebook that not only explains social media marketing but shows you step by step how to make and implement a plan.

My first impression on thumbing through "Social Media Marketing: An Hour a Day" is that Dave Evans has not just crafted a well-written, practical marketing book but a textbook. I have no doubt you could take this material straight into a college classroom and use it to teach a course. (And I hope someone does just that.) I've had the privilege of meeting the author through Social Media Club Austin, and I can assure readers that over the course of many conversations with Dave I have found that he is not someone who has recently jumped on the social media "buzzwagon" but is someone who thoroughly knows his subject and can explain it in an understandable fashion. Give Dave Evans an hour of your day, and in three months you'll have created a complete social media marketing plan. I'd say that's well worth the price of the book!

Tap into the power of the Social Web through connected networks and consumer-oriented media by writing and implementing a plan!

I loved this book. Over the past year or so I have read quite a number of tomes regarding social media and social media marketing, but none until this one have been written in a planner or workbook format. This one is well written, well organized, and full of content. It has 14 chapters split into the following four parts or sections: I. The Foundation of Social Media II. Month 1: Prepare for Social Marketing III. Month 2: Social Media Channels IV. Month 3: Complete Your Plan Two books similar to this one on how to put together a business plan are: "16 Weeks to Your Dream Business" (ISBN: 9780071588362, and "Self Employment: From Dream to Reality" (ISBN: 1563709228). And a book similar to this one on how to put together a fundraising plan is: "The Fundraising Planner" (ISBN: 0787944351). The instant book being reviewed touches on the marketing issues of social media, and then devises a systematic approach to putting together a social media marketing plan customized to your small business. Each of the 14 chapters ended with a summary section. I found it very easy to cruise through this book by first reading the summary sections and then tackling the rest of the book after having a pretty good idea of what was being covered. After reading this book you will have devised a social media marketing plan that addresses (1) platform, (2) content, and (3) interaction. You will have decided whether to use Technorati, MySpace, Socialvibe, Flickr, Facebook, Friendster, Linkedin, and/or YouTube. Technorati is the tunnel through which to learn more about the blog or blogs you will create. So if you want to tap into the power of the Social Web through connected networks and consumer-oriented media, then I recommend this book as one of the tomes you seek out and read in order to build your company's social media marketing plan. 5 stars! PS. Take a look at the Search Inside feature at Amazon for this book. There you can access the book's Table of Contents and see exactly what is covered.

How to Sell Network Marketing Without Fear, Anxiety or Losing Your Friends! (Selling from the Soul. Ancient Wisdoms. Modern Practice)

How to Sell Network Marketing Without Fear, Anxiety or Losing Your Friends! (Selling from the Soul. Ancient Wisdoms. Modern Practice)

...a MUST HAVE Book!

I love "really good" books. As a Financial Advisor and a Business Consultant, I consume a ton of books and do a lot of research and due dilligence for my clients. Network Marketing - As a Home Biz Coach and a Network Marketing professional (for over 20-years), I have also studied many books, audios, videos, CDs, DVDs on - and taken many courses about - the Network Marketing industry. Despite its critics (and I used to be one) - it's a business model that I greatly respect - and when 'worked correctly' according to the 'right' financial, business, marketing and ethical principles - it has no real comparison on this planet in my opinion. Major Problem - But because of far too much hype + the very poor (OLD methodology) sales / marketing training provided within this industry - there is a terrible failure rate (90-95%)! Distributors are (still) being taught old sales strategies and techniques that are outdated, stressful, and unprofessional. As a result, distributors become uncomfortable, get frustrated, and struggle to succeed. They have not learned (are not learning) the right "people / communication skills" or "sales skills" - and this is a tragedy. There IS a better way. A Revolutionary Book - The Review I'm giving here is about a very important, MUST HAVE book - not just for Home Business entrepreneurs - but for everyone. Michael Oliver - Although I have not personally 'met' this gentleman - I have chatted with him on one of our DRA (Distributor Rights Association) calls recently, where he was our guest speaker ((I'm proud to be serving on the DRA Board Of Directors, as Canada's representative. The DRA is a non-profit, global organization that serves to educate, inform, preserve and protect the 'rights' of Network Marketing distributors everywhere)). Natural Selling - In my opinion, Michael Oliver is perhaps "the" finest teacher / educator / coach within the Network Marketing // Direct Sales industry. His contribution to this industry is huge. In addition to being a brilliant author, he is in constant demand as a speaker / trainer. His 'Natural Selling' approach to business building is radically different from the methods and techniques that many companies, uplines and other trainers teach to their distributors and associates - and thus, it has met with some controversy. This book is without a doubt, a MUST HAVE resource - for both new as well as experienced Network Marketers (perhaps even more so for veterans). It should be required reading for every Network Marketer in my opinion. In it, Oliver gives us the option of another way to succeed - a more relaxed, fun, professional way. Personally, I love the blueprint he lays out - as it challenges the very problem areas that most face. For example... The 80//20 Rule - Early in this great book, he raises a profound question about the 80//20 Rule (20% of the people end up - doing 80% of the work - achieving 80% of the success). Well, he puts forth the proposition => what if that 20% "makes up" those Rules (which, in many cases, cannot be duplicated by the other 80%)? Hmmm. And what if even 10% of those other 80% "could" succeed - IF those Rules were to be changed somewhat? Hmmm... Attraction // Relationship Marketing - Michael Oliver describes business building using the approach of a "consultative dialogue" with people - to create long term and mutually profitable relationships. It avoids all the "manipulative techniques and high-pressure sales tactics" so commonly being used in this industry. Natural Selling instead, focuses on creating "trust" through relationship building first - and only introducing the products / services / business opportunity as potential solutions "after" a mutual process of discovery with the prospect (he calls them a 'potential partner') - where there's a good FIT for the other person. Stress Free Building - This book teaches distributors "how" to both understand rejection and eliminate it - "how" to overcome the fear of objections - "how" to end call reluctance forever - "how" to forget all about any personal agenda, and instead, concentrate totally on the 'potential partners' needs and wishes - "how" to have 'potential partners' being attracted to YOU (-vs- you chasing them). Communication - When we fail to "communicate" effectively with others, we lose - they lose. Disagreements / arguments / divorces / fights / wars - they can all occur because of a lack of ongoing communication. It's no different in our careers / businesses / professions. It starts with putting the OTHER person's interests first - period. It's about asking good questions - listening sensitively (not only to the 'words' spoken [or not spoken], but to the real 'meaning' behind them) - offering sound solutions to any problems uncovered - but also, being willing to admit it (and actually "walk away" from the situation) should you feel that your solution[s] might NOT be the most appropriate for that person. It's a mindset thing - it's about changing out thinking. Michael Oliver "challenges" us to do just that in his exceptional book. Thank you, Michael! I give this 255-page book a "perfect 10" - a full 5-STAR Rating. Sincerely, Peter Arnold, CLU, CFC / Founder Business Achievers Academy / Canada

Fantastic book!

This is a great book/series for people getting started in the industry. Being an introverted person who had never been self employed before the networking/prospecting process at first was unsettling. This book is the foundation of everything I do now and with this more patient style you can have success using natural selling. If you are naturally introverted with no self employment experience and want to save months of spinning your wheels while building a foundational knowledge towards taking action I would also recommend the following books: Think Like Your Customer - Bill Stinnett How To Hire & Develop Your Next Top Performer - Greenberg, Weinstein, Sweeney Principle Centered Leadership - Stephen Covey The Greatest Networker In The World - John Milton Fogg Make Your Contacts Count - Babor, Waymon How To Have Confidence And Power In Dealing With People - Les Giblin Why We Do What We Do - Deci Talk Your Way To The Top - Hogan The Difference Maker - Maxwell Take Me To Truth - Sanchez, Vieira Secrets Of Self Employment - Edwards I have filtered my way through about 60 books when I entered this industry about 6 months ago and these ones really I think are vital to the average, not so out-going person entering the industry. They also speak to people who are very principle based. I would also try to contact the University Of Illinois's Network Marketing department and try and track down a cheap(er) copy of the textbook Direct Sales by Keith Laggos. You really will save yourself a lot of self-doubt and frustration I promise you.

Church Marketing 101: Preparing Your Church for Greater Growth

Church Marketing 101: Preparing Your Church for Greater Growth

Another good one

Great information, very practical. if you want to understand the biblical need for planned and purposefully church communications, read this book!

A Real Eye-Opener

I am heading a marketing team for our church's Appreciative Inquiry process. Our team jumped in to the task with both feet, but were starting primarily from a corporate standpoint, and without this book's ability to refocus our efforts, we would have missed the most important question. "What face is our church showing the community now, and how can we change that?" ChurchMarketing 101 asked a number of hard questions, and is making us look at our church with new eyes which will enable us to move forward in a much more effective manner. It is a must read not only for the marketing team, but for our ministers and board as well. I highly recommend it for any church that wants to do a better job carrying the message.

Church Marketing 101: Preparing Your Church for Greater Growth

Good book, great insights, will really make you think about yor church at whatever size or level you find yourself. I found it a little bit frustrating that the author does not include some "self-help" tools and "do-it-yourself" steps to surveying and ananlyzing the local church marketplace, however. This leaves the reader in the unfortunate position of feeling the need to hire a professional to get the results they want, something not everyone should do or can afford to do. -Pastor Gary Mauro

Okay but no real ideas in it!

If you know anything at all about basic marketing do not bother buying this book as it is just redundant to what you already know. I was looking for true ideas and strategies not run of the mill Marketing 101 info. If you know NOTHING about marketing then not a bad buy but even then do not expect any big inspirations.

very up to date

For those interested in pin-pointing some of the modern trends in successful church venues. This book is insightful. Short of hiring a PR person for the church or ministry, this book is a great directional tool in putting your best foot/face forward for success in working with people/the church as well as the unchurched visitors in the 21st century. Basically saying first impressions are everything and talks about ways to accomplish this. Not so much image as best face and in my opinion not any cheesier than "Write(ing) the vision on the wall that all may see and fun with it." It is scriptural. Visual fortification is scriptural and effective. Great resourse.

Engineering Your Start-Up: A Guide for the High-Tech Entrepreneur (2nd Edition)

Engineering Your Start-Up: A Guide for the High-Tech Entrepreneur (2nd Edition)

If you are serious about being a High-Tech Entrepreneur

An excellently written book that covers all the bases if you want to be a founder in High-Tech and need guidance this is the one book you must have. I've bought this book not only for myself but copies for co-founders. If you have been approached to join a start-up get this book it will answer all your questions regard the rewards and the risks.

Engineering Your Start-Up

This book has a lot more meat than most other start-up books I have come across so far. In particular it has good explanations of the different financing and compensation options -- making the book useful not just for founders who may need to negotiate with venture capitalists, but also for anyone who works at a start-up (and doesn't know what the difference between stock and stock options are, or how to estimate how much what they are getting may eventually be worth). On the other hand the level of detail about how to get things done isn't always down to the cookbook level, and there is frequent advice along the lines of "have your legal department do x". That may be a good idea, but it's not always an option, and at least I'd expect some discussion about how to get good legal advice etc.

Sage advices throughout

As a trusting reader of the 1st edition "Engineering Your Start-up" since 1999, even I have other books in my collection, I still turn to it from time to time. The authors graciously placed their updated materials on the Web for a long time, and I consulted the resources from time to time. Nevertheless, I think I will buy the 2nd edition soon. Nothing beats the feeling of having a well written book in hand. In passing I'd like to say that the 1st Ed IMHO still offers sage advices tough to get elsewhere.

Read This Before Visiting a VC

This book's special expertise is about designing the financing of your startup! A few years ago when I did a business plan for a technology start-up, the first edition of this book was my source for planning for equity participation for founders, employees, VCs, and the public from founding through IPO. When this second edition came out, I bought it to pass along to a friend in the early stages of a startup. If you are a technical member of a startup, you must read this unless you are already sophisticated in the financing of startups. Don't talk to a VC until you have studied this book. The title is the key. "Engineers" and other technical types will find this a quick and interesting book. And if you are going to play "Monopoly," you must at least know the basic rules first. This is how the game is played in Silicon Valley! If you don't, you will not pass GO and will not collect $200.

Don't Waste Your Time. There Are Much Better Books

This book is an example of what happens when you take a very specialized and difficult topic and try to make it into a book that everyone will buy. Real value and meaning are lost. In addition, there is some dangerous advise in this book, like on p.47 where the author recommends entrepreneurs get start-up ideas from their work at previous employers--BE CAREFUL that could land you in jail. MOst companies make you sign non-compete agreements. How can the author overlook this simple and well-known point??? The book is in general outdated and written like it was thrown together based on previously written articles. Finally, the print quality is so poor and the format so unappealling that it was a struggle to read. I would only recommend this book if you can get it for $2 used like I did and only if you don't know much about starting a high-tech business. Your best bet is "The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs," by far the best book on the topic and the only book you will ever need. I've learned a lot from it and I refer back to it when issues arise.

Site Engineering for Landscape Architects

Site Engineering for Landscape Architects

Where are the &%$ing answers??

I bought this book to help me better understand how to do grading, evaluate contours, etc. All well and good. I begin doing the problems at the end of a chapter, and there is no answer key anywhere in the book. Can't find any reference to answers anywhere. I would have rated the book higher but for this little issue.

This book is not helpful

I am a first-year BLA student, and this text is required for an introductory course in site grading and drainage. This book is very difficult for me to read and understand. Descriptions of calculations are very poorly presented in paragraph narrative, which is mind-numbing to read and comprehend. If the calculations were presented in a step-by-step format, like a math text, they would be dramatically more clear and understandable. I agree with a previous reviewer, as well, that the layout is dysfunctional because the text and corresponding graphics are not on facing pages. This problem is particularly annoying, considering that landscape architecture is a design profession that emphasizes legibility in graphics and presentation material. I would welcome anyone's recommendations for a text that explains this subject in a more helpful way.

A great site engineering reference book for architects, landscape architects, urban planners, and engineers

Site Engineering is a difficult subject for many landscape students and designers, yet it is a very important aspect of landscape architecture. As a landscape architect, you probably do not have to produce a grading plan (it can be done by a civil engineer), but you do need to have some basic site engineering knowledge to be able to coordinate your work with civil and other consultants. You do need to be able to read and visualize an ALTA survey map, or a grading plan; you do need to be able to understand what a concave or convex landform is, what a swale or ridge is, how to read contour or spot elevations, etc. "Site Engineering for Landscape Architects" will give you a very comprehensive knowledge of site engineering. It covers contours and form (constructing a section, contour signature and landform, characteristic of contour lines), interpolation and slope, grading constraints, grading design and process, earthwork, grading landform and architecture, storm water management, the methods to determine the rates and volumes of storm water runoff, natural resources conservation services, required detention storage, designing and sizing storm water management system, horizontal road alignment, vertical road alignment, and various case studies. It is so comprehensive that you can probably do a civil engineer's work after your read it. My suggestion is to buy this book, and look through it to have a general idea of what it covers and know where to find the information when you need it later. You can also look through the portions that you already know and focus on reading the portions that you are not very familiar with and improve your site engineering knowledge. "Site Engineering for Landscape Architects" has 352 pages and many line drawings and interior black-and-white photos. It is a great site engineering reference book for architects, landscape architects, urban planners, and engineers. Gang Chen, Author of "LEED AP Exam Guide" & "Planting Design Illustrated." LEED AP, AIA

Great Site Design Reference

I was a bit tentative when I started to use this text. The book has some minor editing problems, but if your desire is to really understand site design with an emphasis on drainage and grading plan design this text does the trick and does it well. I would recommend this book to any Jr. land development designer/engineer as a must have reference.

Great reference book!

This is a great book to have on your shelf. Kept referring to it for my Site Technology classes and I know I'll be referring to it in the future. I found it very helpful and clearly written. Would highly recommend it.

Elements of Chemical Reaction Engineering (4th Edition) (Prentice Hall International Series in the Physical and Chemical Engineering Sciences)

Elements of Chemical Reaction Engineering (4th Edition) (Prentice Hall International Series in the Physical and Chemical Engineering Sciences)

right on time

I did not have any problems. it arrived right on time and it is new anyway!

Everything I Expected!

Excellent delivery time, great price, mint condition. The book even included the expected software. Overall, no complaints and speedy delivery. Would buy from again!

Very clear about concepts

The book was very clear in the concepts it introduced. Laid out clearly the derivations and especially appreciated the topic sentence on the side of each paragraph. Although the book is clear in the text, I wish the summaries at the end of each chapter would list the assumptions that it makes for each equation so you don't have to look back to the rest of the chapter.

Absolutely worth buying

This book is good not only as a text book because of the simple way it presents the subject, the problems, and the complementary examples on the CD. It is also a great reference, because it has every chapter sumarized by the end, with the formulas. It includes multiple examples both on the book and the Cd, and allows full use of computational tools applied on the problem solving.

Excellent Book

Best book by far that I have had as undergrad. Highly recommended. We all love it at the University of Utah.

Fundamentals of Engineering Thermodynamics

Fundamentals of Engineering Thermodynamics

great text

I took a course in Thermo as an undergrad, but I basically just learned how to solve the textbook problems to the point where I was able to pass the tests, but I never got a good intuitive understanding of the subject. My major was EE so one term of Thermo was a required course but not in the mainstream of my studies, so I never needed to understand it in any greater depth. I recently retired from my career as an EE and have been wanting to become more knowledgable about energy, since I think it is probably the toughest science/engineering issue facing society for the forseeable future. It dawned on me at some point that if I want to be knowledgable about energy, I need to do more than just read books about energy sources, I need to have a decent grounding in those technical disciplines that energy technologies are based on. The most obvious was Thermodynamics, although I decided I should also beef up my Chemistry. And I realized, by golly, I can learn this stuff, because of my engineering background and the fact that I'm not too old for my brain to be decomposing too badly so far. For the moment, I am studying this book on Thermo. I am really happy with this book. They really cover the material with a lot of rigor and give a ton of examples which really help get an intuitive understanding of what the concepts mean for practical systems. I haven't finished the book, but am far enough along to be able to judge it. Right now I'm in the chapter on Exergy. I don't believe we ever got into that in the 1st term Thermo I took 30 years ago or so. The Exergy concept really makes a lot of sense in tying everything together and providing a comprehensive approach toward evaluating the efficiency of a particular system. I do wonder about the notation, though. They denote exergy with an "E", which seems like it could lead to its being mixed up with energy. Wikipedia says that Exergy is denoted by the letter "B". Not sure where that came from but it seems like a good idea to use a completely different letter for it. Aside from some minor issues like that, this book seems outstanding to me. I gather it is the predominant textbook for thermo these days. I would say it deserves that status. I am really looking forward to the later chapters I haven't gotten to yet on the various types of engines and turbos and whatnot. For the material to really sink in, I know I will need to read the book a second time, but the second pass should go quite a bit faster than the first.

Great book

This is a very good text book, it is well written and keeps it short and sweet. It gets to the point. One great feature is that it boxes in derivations that are not nessacary to understand, this way you don't get bogged down in a lot of text. There are tons of examples in the book and no mistakes that I could find. You really can read and understand everything from the text, you don't really need a teacher, which is saying alot, because most books are impossible to read and figure out what's going on. I agree the bio part is worthless, but Moran is obviously into that stuff because he always mentioned it in class. It's really not a bad thing...just skip it, who cares if it's in there. Overall if you want a good thermo book, whether it's self taught or in a class, it's a good choice.

Improve the fundamentals - Dump the PC editorializing

This is a fairly good text; however the authors have found it necessary to include silly "Bio-Connections" and "Environment" editorals at 5 to 10 page intervals. These are nothing more than warm-fuzzies for bio-engineers who may be taking a thermo-class, and PC "global warming" editorials that have little technical benefit to teaching the core material. It became particularly infuriating when you see a 3/4 page silly "bio-connections" editorial on fluorocarbon global warming and they in the same section neglect having an explanatory figure on the P-v vapor dome. Or they devote 3/4 page on a "bio-connections" essay on storing bananas in zip-lock bags (trying to connect bio-chem with thermodynamics), and give short shrift to the Kelvin-Plank statement (and only supply a very skimpy 2"x2" figure for the explaining Kelvin-Plank). The editorial board and tag-along sub-authors damaged this text. Stick with engineering and the fundamentals - and for crying out loud if you want to add "bio", "nano-nano" and carbon credits DON'T do it at the expense of Kelvin and Clausius. I like the text's general concise-ness, and the problem sets and example problems are pretty good. The Cengel text gives better explanations, but is more wordy.
